Update On Casey's Allergies - No More Shots!

Hey, guess what? Casey doesn't have to take allergy shots anymore!! Woohoo!!

But, he is now on Atopica for his allergies, because the shots didn't help him at all. He has been taking the medicine for 4 days now and so far (knock on wood), there seems to be slight improvement, because I can now pet him without driving him crazy with the itchies. But, the medicine is even more expensive than the shots. The generic medicine is $96.36 from Costco for a one month supply. Plus, Casey is going to HAVE to have a blood test next month that costs about $75. I can't remember exactly why this is so, but it has to do with comparing where he is at now, with how he is doing after one month on the meds.

Well, I'm just going to have to dig a little deeper in the house and garage to see what else I can sell. I do have some things on Craigslist instead of Ebay, because of the shipping costs. I'm starting to sell our Native American collection of paintings and such, but these things are large. Plus, when I bought them (almost 20 years ago now), they weren't cheap!! I have at least 3 pieces from the very talented artist, Cleo Teissedre and one really HUGE piece from Celia.

I also have everything in my Artfire store at 50% off and I'm hoping to sell everything soon, as I'm just not getting any better. I can tell that I'm not going to be able to sell online for much longer now. BTW, I have a little mini store over on the right side of this blog that goes directly to my Artfire store. If I remember right, you don't even have to be a member of Artfire to use that little shopping cart.

I did sell my sewing machine the other day and it was harder than I thought it would be. That sewing machine was given to me by my youngest daughter on Mother's day two years ago, and I cried after the lady left. I was depressed all night long. It's hard enough to be in the position where you have to sell everything that you worked so hard for over the years, but to sell something your children give is heartbreaking!!! Well, I can't dwell on that any longer.

The main thing is to make sure that Casey is taken care of and as comfortable as possible. I'm really hoping that this medicine works, because he deserves to be able to go to the park this summer. It's just cruel to keep him inside when the weather is so nice.

Temporary Leave of Absence from My Etsy Store

Due to increasing disability pain, I am temporarily closing my Etsy store. I hope to be back soon, but at this time, I don't have a 'return to work' date. I have moved what listings I had left over to my ArtFire store, as it's easier to run. I have a few plastic bags in stock, but no bubble mailers, bubble wrap or other shipping materials.

I want to thank all my SUPER customers who have made my brief stay on Etsy a success! I've met a lot of extremely talented and super nice people here and I wish everyone the best! Hopefully I will be able to return soon.

So I dug out the camera and just did it!
Yeah, it was as difficult as I thought it would be,
but it was also a LOT of fun too!! lol!!

Then I noticed another gadget didn't work, but there wasn't a 'fix' for that one and it had to be deleted.

Pets Jubilee Sampler Boxes

Yesterday, I blogged about purchasing a PIF Pets Julilee Sampler Box. Today I want to share some pictures of Casey enjoying some treats from this sampler. Please forgive the quality of the photos, as our camera isn't new and isn't the best. But it tries really hard to take pictures for us anytime we need it, so I can't complain.

This is Casey, obediently holding a Fish Shaped Peanut Butter Cookie, while laying on his bed, as my daughter takes his picture. You can SEE the torture in his eyes, as he tries really hard to NOT CHOMP down on that tasty cookie! lol!

Here you can see Casey with a resigned look on his face. He KNOWS he won't get to move an inch until given the command, "OK!". lol!!

Casey is looking a little disgusted now, but he is only about one second from finally receiving the command that will allow him to swallow that cookie in one or two super fast bites.

At last! Casey FINALLY got to eat that delicious cookie and man-oh-man does he ever look satisfied! Casey is also just a little bit disappointed that the cookie is gone, but that's ok because we had more treats for him.

And he waits for yet another picture. Casey loves to pose for us, but he is even more willing to sit and wait when he 'nose' (hehehe) there is going to be a yummy reward at the end of the photo session.

And here he is, just mere seconds away from an EXPLOSION of treats going everywhere!

We didn't get a picture of him running around the room, snatching up all the treats, but I can guarantee that he totally ENJOYED every tasty treat that he found! LOL!!

This PIF package was PACKED with all kinds of goodies! We found Fantastic Fuzzballs, a crocheted catnip toy by CocoaCreamCrochet, Kitty Cheese Teaser Treats by Divine Canine, a Kitty Love Magnet by Purr Prints, Chicken Biscuits for dogs by Divine Canine, Funny Ernie - a cute message card by Funny Ernie, a cute doggy gift tag by DogsRule, an adorable Doxie postcard by SassySashaDoxie, coupons from PaperMoonGallery, GeorgiesMom and Fun Fashion For Fluffy Friends. We also received a Cute & Colorful Foam Cat by an unknown seller as well as these tasty treats by another unknown seller: Chicken Treats for dogs & cats; Peanut Butter Cookies for dogs; Banana Treats for dogs, guinea pigs and rabbits.

One of the doggy treats by Compass Rose Girl's Pet Parlor didn't make in into the picture, because Casey just HAD to eat the cute heart-shaped organic peanut butter treat. He said he LOVED it!

Another item that didn't get into the 'group' picture, is this 'Licks of Love' Doggie "Flee Flea"Shampoo bar by Skin Essentials . We had already placed it in the bathroom so that we could use it. I meant to give all sellers the same exposure, but I messed up. So I apologize to everyone!! As you can see, Casey was VERY interested in everything in the package! LOL!!

I want to thank Pets Jubilee for this opportunity, as well as all the sellers who contributed to this sampler box/PIF! Now that I know what the Pet Sampler Boxes are all about, I will be back for more!

The only thing that I didn't like about this particular sampler box, was that a few of the items were not marked with the name of the seller, so I can't give them proper credit or know where to return for more of their items. But, it could be that in our excitement over seeing all the goodies, we just mixed everything up and didn't get all the pieces of the puzzle back together correctly. lol!!

Other than that, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Pets Jubilee and the Pet Sampler Boxes!!

It really DOES pay to shop around!

I've been seeing all these car insurance commercials lately that tell us to shop around to see what other companies charge. I've been meaning to do this for some time now and just kept putting it off and putting it off. Well, I finally got around to checking with Hartford insurance through AARP.

To say that I was SHOCKED when I found out how much I could save, is an understatement! By the time the lady gave me one discount after another, I am now saving almost $1000 a YEAR!

That's not just a little drop in the bucket here. That's $82.42 a MONTH!

Now here's a little tip to remember before you go do this. First of all, have your current insurance information handy so that you can compare the two equally. Second, wait until the month your current insurance expires, because if you quit in the middle of a policy term, you might have to pay a termination fee, depending on what state you live in. Colorado allows insurance companies to charge a $50 termination fee.

But even if you decide to quit before the term is up, you might still get a refund of any money you have paid in for the month or quarter. Just be sure to ask about this before making any decisions.

Huge Lot of New Costume Jewelry!

I'm continuing to clear out my work room and I ran across this huge lot of new costume jewelry that had been bought when a chain store closed down in my area. Plus I've added some of the items I've picked up during my jewelry making years, when I would find a good deal on pre-made jewelry. There is a total of 95 pieces in this auction, including 60 pairs of really nice earrings! If I was still working or had somewhere to go, I would wear the earrings myself! Even if they are not homemade!! lol!!

It's really hard!

My one and only New Year's resolution for 2009, is to be positive all the time no matter what. But sometimes it's really hard to stay that way when there is so much negativity at the two websites I sell stuff online, Etsy and ArtFire. Oh, it's not the websites fault, but rather a small (very small) handful of members that insist in being negative and ungrateful for everything! I don't go in the forums as much as I used to just to stay away from all this negativity, but I really need to network and interact with people.

I don't want my experience to be like ebay, where the only time I go into the forums is to try and find an answer to a question I have. But I find myself falling into the old mindset of either being negative or becoming angry at those who are spreading the negativity. Why do they insist on not only living their lives in this manner, but also spreading this behavior to everyone else?

They feel as if the world should be given to them on a golden platter and when it's not, they strike out at everyone. When they aren't selling as well as they think they should, they blame everyone but themselves.

Ah, but I break my vow of positive behavior with this very posting, huh? But sometimes is helps to unload the poison pen unto the paper, therefore releasing ourselves from the bonds of negativity so that we may soar with positivity!

Positive is as Positive does!

To experience the lightness and freedom that positivity can bring, we must adjust our thinking so that we don't allow the negative thoughts to seep in. Instead of thinking, "I really hate being late all the time", think "I enjoy being on time" instead. Try to put a positive spin on how you think and feel at all times. Only then can you really and truly be positive, think positive and experience positive things in your life!

Two totally different animals, in size and species, locked in a relationship filled with love, respect and caring for the well-being of each other. Humans consider animals as an inferior species. But if they are smart enough to not let looks, size, color or lifestyle get in the way of being friends or even just being friendly towards each other, then perhaps humans need to find a way to learn from them so that we are more tolerant towards one another.

Do you spend a lot of money on ink cartridges?
Well, STOP IT!!

Not only is it expensive, but it's also bad for the environment by throwing away all those plastic cartridges! Unless you send in the old cartridges to recycle them at a place like Planet Green.

So don't waste your money on new ink cartridges! Refill them yourself! I bought an 8oz black refill ink from Printer Filler Station a year ago and I'm just now going to have to get more. I go through a LOT of ink too!!

You'll find help getting the correct ink/toner you need and even help learning how to refill. It's super simple and much better for the environment!!!

How to make your packages arrive faster in the USA

A really quick tip for making your domestic (USA) packages arrive faster, is to go to the 'Find A Zip Code' page at USPS. Have that page open while you are preparing your paypal labels. When you are at the address page on paypal, copy and paste the address into the 'Find A Zip Code' page and get the extra four digits at the end of the zip code to paste into the paypal label page.

For instance, the zip code 73601 becomes 73601-4349 after running it through the zip code finder.

Those extra four digits will help your packages get to their destinations much faster!! Oh, and you don't have to use this just for paypal either. It's just what I do. :)

Turf Wars Almost Claimed Two Young Lives!!!

My daughter and I had just got home Saturday afternoon, with another load of my other daughter's furniture from her storage unit, when my daughter yelled that 'our' squirrels were fighting and a baby had just fallen out of the tree. Just as I came around the corner, another baby fell and hit the ground with a sickening thud!

I ran to get some paper towels and picked up the squirrels, while my daughter ran to get boxes. They were both still breathing, so we got a cage from the garage (one of the items from the storage unit).

We've called one of the local wild animal rescue units, who thought that this might have been caused by Squirrely Turf Wars. Or maybe something happened to the mother and another mother came along and decided the nest would be a good home for her younguns.

The babies are close to being full grown and seem to be stabilized right now, so we stopped and picked up an apple (recommended by the rescue person). Amazingly enough, when I told the person at the fruit stand that the apple was for two baby squirrels, they gave the apple to me free! :)

The babies spent the night in the quiet, darkness of the garage and were much better Sunday morning. So we decided to take the cage outside so they could have some fresh air, after giving them some fresh apples. We placed the cage on top of an old sewing machine cabinet I had sitting outside in the shade of the porch awning.

We noticed a couple of squirrels on the porch and to our surprised delight, momma squirrel jumped on top of the cabinet and tried to find a way into the cage. So my daughter took the cage over to the base of the tree where the nest is located, opened the top of the cage and then backed away. Momma squirrel quickly ran over to the cage, jumped inside and picked up one of her babies. She ran up the tree and deposited her loved one in the nest and scampered back down to the cage, where she lovingly grabbed the other baby, and ran up to the nest with him (her?).

We are DELIGHTED that the family is back together now, after one very scary night apart! We still don't know why this happened, but we are thankful that it turned out alright!!

Competing with Large Wholesalers on Etsy

When I first starting selling on etsy, I was lead to believe that it was a venue for the home seller. An individual. Not large wholesalers with lots of money to back them up and employees to help them fill orders, answer convos and do advertising, etc., etc.

I'm just one person, trying to supplement a very small income from disability. I can't afford to buy in bulk like those large wholesalers do, so I can't possible compete with the prices they are going with now. When they first started, they were priced WAY higher than me. Now they are cheaper, but they do things like shipping by USPS Parcel Post which is *way* slower than USPS Priority mail.

To make things worse, they are also practicing tag abuse so that their COMMERCIAL SUPPLIES are showing up in the HOMEMADE DEFAULT SEARCH! I do often think of joining them by taking the Commercial tag off of my listings. Sigh....I just don't how much longer I can keep my store open at this rate. :(

If I should have to close my store, I want all my customers to know how much I appreciate their support!!

Rainy Day Fun For Kids

I was talking to my daughter today about things we used to do when she and her sister was younger (they are both over 21 now!), when it was too rainy to go outside and play. Since we used to live in Washington state, that happened a lot back then! lol!! Of course, this weekend is very rainy because of the Wheat Ridge Carnation Festival. It rains every year during the festival!

Anyway, I remembered the Play-dough we used to make. It was super easy and would last for a long time! You can use food dye to make different colors, or use flavored Koolaid for extra fun! Here is the very easy recipe:

Play-Dough Recipe

4 cups flour

1 cup salt

4 cups water

4 tablespoons oil

1/2 cup cream of tartar

Mix all ingredients in a sauce pan. Cook and stir over low/medium heat until play dough is completely formed and no longer sticky. Allow to cool slightly before storing in an air tight container or zip lock bag.

**You'll find Cream of Tartar in the Spice section of your grocery store. It's a little expensive, so you might want to check online for bulk Cream of Tartar. Here is a link to one place online that sells bulk foods: http://tinyurl.com/2zvabg

There are recipes out there that you don't have to cook, but they either use cold water or edible ingredients. Both of which are fine, but the 'edible' recipes MUST be refrigerated and are usually only a brown color, because they have peanut butter as one of the ingredients.

The cold water non-cook recipe is also fine, but it takes a LOT of mixing to dissolve the cornstarch and if you put the finished dough in a plastic bag after finally getting it mixed up and in a ball shape, it will eventually just sort of spread into a sticky mess.

Gave Casey his first Allergy Shot today!!

As promised, the dermatologist shipped the allergy medicine that he 'brewed' up over the weekend and it was delivered today. We have two vials, Vial A and Vial B. Starting with Vial A, I gave Casey a shot of .10cc's today, then two days from now he will receive a shot with .20 cc's, and two days from that 40 cc's and so on until the last day for Vial A @ 1.00 cc's.

Then we move on to Vial B, starting with .10 cc's and moving up until we are at 1.00 cc's every 21 days.

I decided that it would be easier to make up some calendars using my Print Shop program, to list the days Casey will receive a shot and the dosage. I did this for four months and then I believe we will have to order more medicine.

If I remember correctly, it could be up to SIX MONTHS before we start seeing much of an improvement. Sigh....I'm wanting the itching to stop NOW!!

Oh, and the price was pretty good for the medicine too; it's only $145 for 4 months. Of course, it would be easier to pay by the month, instead of one lump sum, but I suppose you couldn't get that great price doing that.

As far as giving the shots, well I have to admit being just a little bit nervous about that. At first I couldn't even remember how to open the needle case and then I remembered that the vet said to 'pop' the end of the case against the table, just a light tap. That did it! So I had the needle out (tiny little thing it was too) and I must have checked that I have VIAL A in my hand about 3 dozen times.LOL!!

I inserted the needle into the circle of rubber (?) at the end of the vial and drew up a little more than .10 cc's of medicine. Ok, here I have to say that I had a 'blonde' moment and remarked to my daughter about the needle not being long enough to reach the medicine at the bottom of the vial. My daughter was like, "Uhm, you have to turn the vial upside down.....". hahahahahaha!!!!

Ok, so after I got the needle to reach the medicine, I pulled the plunger back so that I had more than I needed and pushed the plunger in so that the excess (including any air bubbles) went back in to the vial and stopped the plunger at exactly .10 cc's.

The my daughter had Casey sit for me and I grabbed up some of his loose skin on his neck, holding it with my left hand between my thumb and middle finger so I could feel where the needle would go in.

After saying a little prayer and taking a deep breath, I plunged the needle in Casey's skin and slowly pushed the plunger in until it was empty. Casey didn't do much other than to look around at me to see what I was doing to him. But afterwards, the only way I could tell that anything had been done was the injection site was 'slightly warm' to the touch. But that only lasted maybe 5 minutes.

Then we watched Casey for any signs of a reaction for a couple of hours, but he seemed fine!

Casey's Test Results are in!!

Casey went to see Dr. David Beadleston, Friday April 4th, and after a quick exam, the doctor allowed us to help him do the allergy tests!! It was very interesting to watch this process and have the doctor explain what he is doing and the reasons that each irritant is chosen for the tests. Casey has to be sedated during the process, but it was pretty much like a really good nights sleep for him.

Then the doctor shaved Caseys belly and put 30 dots in rows with a (not so) permanant marker. Then he rolled out this little fabric case with a bunch of numbered needles and proceeded to inject an irritant on top and below each of those dots.

First he started with a saline solution and a histamine; both of which were the 'control' substance. After that he injected things like dust mites, pollens, molds, different types of trees and grasses, and even human dander.

Then we waited. It took about 15-20 minutes for the 'spots' to develop and the first two that was VERY evident that he was allergic to, was Dust Mites and House Dust!! I tried my best to get the doctor to back me up on forcing my daughter to do more house work for Caseys well being; but he felt that he had to explain that no matter how clean your house is, the dust mites & dust WILL be present! DARN!!! lol!!

Then the next two substances that were an irritant, was Kentucky Blue Grass and Western Ragweed.

What this all means, is that Casey has Year Round Allergies!! The Kentucky Blue grass is a summer allergy, the Western Ragweed is a fall allergy, but the dust mites & dust is sadly the year round allergy.

So the dermatologist is brewing up some medicine over the weekend and hopefully we will have it by Tuesday to start his allergy shots. To help us save on money, he taught me how to give the injections and promises to have full instructions included. Thank goodness!!

BTW, I also asked Dr. Beadleston to check out the lump on Casey's back. He agreed that it was very strange and used a needle to draw out some liquid from the lump, causing it to become slightly smaller. He then checked that liquid and said that it wasn't an infection, so the antibiotics that Casey takes weren't going to help. He said it wasn't anything to worry about, just fluid build up around the injection site from when Casey was ill and hospitalized. He said that it would probably build back up again, and depending on how fast it built back up, would determine whether or not they would consider surgery to remove it.

Well, today it's back to the size it was before, which makes me worry that the fluid is filling very fast and Casey *might* be looking at another surgery sometime down the road. :(

Anyway, I want to thank everyone who has helped us get this far!!! We will continue selling on ebay as long as we have small items that are easy to ship. Once all that is gone, then we will being selling our larger items on Craigs List or doing local garage sales, as I believe this will be a lifelong commitment to Casey's health and well being!!!

Sometimes I wonder about people!

As usual, I had scheduled a USPS Carrier Pickup for my packages. Since I thought my regular mailman might be off today, I also put my "package pickup today" card in the mailbox and raised the flag. Every so often, I would check to see if the packages had been picked up. Several hours past the usual pickup time, I noticed that the packages were still on my porch (which is protected by a 6 foot wooden fence), so I went outside to peek at my mailbox and saw that the flag was down. I thought that to be very strange that my flag would be down but my mail hadn't been picked up. So I went out to try and find out why my flag wasn't up anymore and found mail in the box!

Yep, they had came by and left mail but didn't pick up the packages! Not only that, but they had taken my little 6x6 inch 'package pickup today' card!! I couldn't believe it!! They took the incorrectly sized card with no postage, no return or destination address, that clearly says "PACKAGE PICKUP TODAY" on it. LOL!!!

But I couldn't worry about that just because I had my customers packages to worry about. So I called my local post office and explained that I had scheduled a carrier pickup, but no one had been by yet. They told me that they had split the route up between two people, but would get someone to me very quickly. Within 20 minutes of calling, I heard someone at my door and when I opened it, I saw the mailman collecting the packages. I asked him what happened and he said he didn't know because this wasn't his route. He had been called in to do this 'special pickup'. Right! Sigh....

But that problem was solved, so then I could turn my attention to the missing 'package pickup today' card. I needed a new one! One that wouldn't get taken by lackadaisical postal workers. This is what I came up with:

Happy Leap Day!

Today only happens every 4 years, so we should all celebrate by doing something special!! I caught up on my feedback!! lol!! Hey, I was really far behind this time!!

I feel just awful when that happens and I feel even worse when I have to cut and paste my replies. I would much rather my feedback be personal, like it used to be, but then I would never get it done.

I've been giving a lot of lot as how to handle the upcoming USPS.COM rate hike increase in May and hope *crosses fingers* to get a new tutorial done soon, as well as getting my store shipping prices adjusted. I truly do hope I don't have to raise my prices much more, but I'm afraid that the international prices are going to be outrageous!!

Well, I guess the big 'Martha Stewart' todo was today. I don't watch much tv, except for a few shows in the evening, so I really don't know much about it. I do wish all the etsy sellers involved, good luck!! Hopefully this will kickstart their career!!

Good News!!

Casey is home tonight, after getting filled with over $500 worth of meds & love at the vet. He goes back in the morning to have the 'stint' removed from his arm, and will be on meds & bland food for a week. We still have no idea what happened, but all that matters is that he is much better now!!!

Now we start all over again, finding house hold items to sell on ebay, to come up with the money for Casey's allergy tests he needs. He is halfway through the 'detox' time he needed for the prednisone he was on when he got ill. I feel really bad, because my daughter has worked so hard and sold so much of her possessions on ebay. She got really close to having all the money she needed for those tests, only to give most of it to the vet.

Oh, and the vet charged us for 'daycare' on the bill!! Can you believe that??? DAYCARE!!!!

But that's life! The good Lord giveth and the good Lord taketh away!! We will just have to work even harder this time!!! :)

Casey, the Golden Retriever and the reason we are selling our possessions, is quite ill and in the hospital. We are not sure what is wrong with him at this time, as he just took ill yesterday afternoon and kept getting worse. We have a very good vet running tests and replenishing his fluids, so we hope he will get better soon!!

US Postal Rate Changes May 2008

FYI, in May of 2008, the United States Post Office will again raise mailing and shipping rates. The group MOST affected by these changes, will be international buyers!!

Casey Brought Home Supper tonight!!

Every night my daughter takes Casey for a walk around the neighborhood, and every night Casey brings home a 'treasure' to me, the Alpha Bitch! He has brought home trash, pop cans, baseballs, footballs, golf balls, tennis balls, a childs shoe, a fork and even a pair of brand new mens steel toe work boots! I never know what he will bring me, but he is a always VERY proud of his 'kill'.

Tonight, as they were leaving for their walk, I told Casey to "bring home something for supper", and he surprised me with this:

MRI tomorrow morning

Well, I go in tomorrow morning for my mri, so I should know by the middle of next week if I will need more surgery. I just can't even think of more surgery right now, even if it might make things better for me. I know I shouldn't be afraid, but I am. :(

As far as the ebay auctions I've been helping my daughter with for Casey's medical tests, we are still plugging away at them. Trying to list a little bit each day. We had to cancel a winning bid today, as the person from outside the US thought we accepted money order. I felt really bad about having to cancel on them, as they seemed really nice. But I'm just not going through that hassle on Ebay. I'll accept them on etsy, but that's a different situation entirely!!

We have had numerous emails like, 'how fast do you ship?' (it says in the listings, within 24 hours of verified paypal payment) or 'can I bid on your item if I live in France?' (yep, I've got it worldwide and as long as you have at least 3 positive feedbacks, no problem!)

Now, I don't mind giving newbies a chance, but I'm concerned about scamming with the type of things my daughter is selling, like her Dragonball and Dragonball Z figures.

You just never know and have to be on your toes at all times on ebay!!!

Free Priority Shipping Boxes and Envelopes

Just a quick reminder about the free USPS priority (or express) boxes or envelopes you get from your post office or delivered to your home for free here: USPS

DO NOT, and I can't stress this enough, DO NOT turn these boxes or envelopes inside out and try to use them to ship first class, ups, fedex or dhl shipping!!! You WILL get caught and you WILL either get fined, or worse, got to jail for mail fraud!! The post office is cracking down on this!! I witnessed a woman at the post office once who tried to do this and it wasn't a pretty situation at all!!!

So if you do get these free boxes, please-please use them as they are intended!!!

Well, I went to my doctor yesterday and he is sending me for another MRI. He is also talking surgery again, which I want like a hole in my head. :(

I really don't enjoy having MRI's done, because the machine is too noisy and I feel like I'm in a coffin. I don't care that it's brightly lit and noisy, it's too confining and I have to really fit the urge to jump up and run away before they throw dirt on top of me. lol

Hopefully, they won't find any major changes to speak of and we can blame the cold weather for my increased difficulties. :)

I haven't had much time to blog lately, as I've been busy on Ebay, selling items from around the house to help fund Casey's allergy skin test. We've been fairly lucky so far, and are crossing our fingers that our luck holds out until we reach the needed $700-800 by the middle of next month. By then, Casey will have been off his Predisone long enough for the allergists to do the test, so we've been putting all our spare time and energy into this.

An Unusually Busy Weekend

It's almost 3am my time, and I'm still working on orders received over the weekend. I want everyone to know that I have received your order and I'm working on getting them ready to ship out Tuesday morning, after the Martin Luther King Holiday, Monday 1/21/08.

I believe this is the first time since opening my store that I haven't had time to contact everyone who ordered from me, on that same day. I've been working straight though, except for the time I took to go buy some more printer ink and a quick supper with my daughter. :)

I apologize for not contacting you today, but promise to get all convos sent out tomorrow (or rather, later today) asap. I will also work on getting caught up on feedback later today. *crosses fingers/toes and knocks on wood*.

The reason I put it that way, is because my daughter wants me to work with her later today to sell some more of her items on Ebay. She is trying to make enough money to get an allergy skin test for Casey, and we're looking at about $700 - $800 for the tests. So far, she has sold all her games and game players and will try selling her books, clothing and videos. If I have time, I'm going to go through my things to see what I can sell to help her out. I would like to sell our 1984 Chevy Nova, but the weather isn't letting us get outside to give it a good cleaning.

Why is it taking so long for my International Package to get delivered?

Have you sent out an international package and wondered why it is taking forever to get to your buyer? Or maybe had a buyer write and ask, "Where's my package?"

Well, before you ship out that International package, maybe you should check the Service Updates through usps.com for Political or Economical conditions that might effect your shipping time. By clicking that link, you'll find out things like:

Brazil - A custom Clearance Process causing delays for small packages for the states of Rio De Janeiro and Espirito Santo.

Internet/Website Copyright Laws

According to the US Copyright Office, all works published on and after March 1, 1989, use of copyright notice is optional.

Wouldn't that mean that it is perfectly acceptable (and often helpful) for a work to contain a notice for the original material as well as for the new work, it is no longer required by law?

There was a discussion in the Etsy forums about this when it was noticed that the Etsy 2007 copyright notice on the website didn't change over on 1/1/08.

I thought it was a pretty good discussion until a 'professional' refused to talk to me because I wasn't another lawyer well versed in intellectual property legislation.

Well, the way I look at it, is if you don't want to get into a discussion with people 'beneath' you, don't enter into a thread that talks about the very subject you want to avoid, right? Very simple.

I could say more, but have decided that I'm above that kind of 'put-down'. I will NEVER make fun of someone because of who they are or how much schooling they had. NEVER!!!

See, I *knew* there was a good reason I was staying out of the forums lately. :(

International Shipping Tip #4
Measure Your Packages

As sellers who ship within the US all the time, we have learned how important it is to measure our packages due to the USPS Postage rate change in May of 2007. What some may not know, is there are also restrictions on the SIZE of your International package as well as the WEIGHT.

For instance, yesterday I checked some shipping prices for a potential customer in Finland, who wanted a larger order of supplies than what I had listed. Since it was late at night when I first responded to her email, I shot off an email with a quote for so many pounds. To my horror, the next day I found out that the package I had given a quote for, couldn't be shipped by first class because it was larger than the maximum package size.

So I quickly went to usps to get a few options for her and this is what I found out about Finland:

First Class:
Maximum Package Weight: 4 pounds (64 ounces)
Maximum Length: 24 inches
Maximum Length + Girth: 36 inches

Global Priority:
Maximum Package Weight: 70 pounds
Maximum Length: 42 inches
Maximum Length + Girth: 79 inches

The flat rate priority boxes are different from the regular priority!!

*What is 'girth'? Girth is when you measure all the way around the package on the 'short' side. Just remember that when you measure the length, you measure the longest side of the package. When you measure 'girth', you are measure the OTHER side of the package and go all the way around as if you were measuring the waist of the package. :)

So, where can you find this information? Click here

Click the little blue numbers next to the country you need to find information about. When you get to that page, find the rate chart for the mailing service you'll be using, such as first class or priority and look directly underneath that chart. You'll see the words "Size Limits" followed by "SEE" and some numbers, like this: See 235.2

I know this might sound a little more complex than some of the other things I've talked about, but click on the links I've given you and take a look around NOW, before you NEED the information. That will make it easier for you than trying to understand it while you are stressed out trying to get a package finished before the mailman shows up at your door!!!

Adding Insurance To International Packages

Sadly, the only insurance you can get for international packages, is when you ship by Global Priority. When you ship by priority, your packages are automatically covered at no additional charge under the USPS Indemnity Insurance and protects mailers against loss, damage or missing contents. Coverage is calculated based on the weight of the parcel and not on the value of the contents of the parcel. BUT this doesn't include the FLAT RATE ENVELOPE!!!

You can buy extra insurance and it might be worth it since their Indemnity Insurance goes by weight and NOT value!!! You can find the rate charts and more information HERE.

Your work is precious and I would hate to see it get lost, especially if it has a really high value!! The rates for shipping by priority really aren't that bad if your package will be less than 1lb:

Canada = $16.00
Australia = $21.00
UK = $20.00

So you could do a shipping set up like this:

US = (what you charge now)
Puerto Rico = (same as US)
Canada = $16.00 + Insurance ($1.35 covers up to $50)
Everywhere Else = $21.00 + Insurance ($1.95 covers up to $50)

I think that's pretty reasonable for protected shipping!! And if you explain in your listings that the packages ARE shipped by priority and insured for their protection, they will appreciate your care with their purchase.

Save one of the packages you have received from another Etsy seller that is the size you normally use to ship with, leaving the paypal shipping label on there for the added weight.

When you are ready to list a new item and have already set up your shipping profiles by weight, then simply grab that package you saved, the item you are listing and anything else you normally add to your packages like promos and such. Then you can weigh the item and know exactly how much it will be with ALL the packaging material included.

No guessing and therefore, no costly mistakes.

I've noticed that many sellers are being told by poorly trained postal workers, that they can't get carrier pickup or use the blue drop off boxes for packages weighing over 13 ounces that have Paypal, Click-n-ship, stamps.com or Endicia.com shipping labels on them. So here is the official press release from the usps.com website that was posted earlier this year:

New 13-Ounce Mail Rule to Take Effect July 30

WASHINGTON, DC — A new Postal Service rule goes into effect next week for packages and envelopes that weigh more than 13 ounces, if they’re being mailed with only stamps as postage at a location other than a Post Office retail service counter.

Starting Monday, July 30, customers can use one of several convenient online postage applications — available 24/7 — or an Automated Postal Center, if they wish to mail items that weigh more than 13 ounces in Postal Service collection boxes or Post Office lobby mail slots; or if they wish to leave the items for pickup by their letter carriers. Online postage applications include the Postal Service’s Click-N-Ship service on usps.com and PC Postage from an authorized USPS vendor.

If a customer is unable to use one of the above methods to prepare and affix postage, items weighing more than 13 ounces must be presented for mailing to an employee at a Post Office retail service counter. Business customers who use postage meters may continue to use meter postage for packages of any weight and mailing method.

Customers will notice new decals on USPS collection boxes, and Post Office lobby and Automated Postal Center mail drop slots. The new red, white and blue decals inform customers that deposit of stamped mail over 13 ounces is prohibited, and any such mail will be returned.

Previously, the prohibition applied to mail over 16 ounces. The change is part of ongoing security measures established by the Postal Service, in cooperation with other government agencies to keep the public, customers, employees and the U.S. Mail safe.

fuzzyfibers

The other day, I received a FANTASTIC package in the mail and I'm so excited about this package, that I just have to share it. You see, a couple of weeks ago, I was contacted by the SUPER TALENTED Etsy FIBER ARTIST, fuzzyfibers, who was in need of some information that I just happen to have. She was delighted to receive this information and in exchange, she offered to send me some of her homespun yarn.

**Her cards do not have the stripe at the bottom, but I didn't want to post her email all over the internet and that's why it's blocked out.**

You see, I've recently began to teach myself how to knit and crochet, just for fun and relaxation. But I've been working with the cheaply made polyester stuff that you can find in just about every retail store in the world. I've been wanting to try some of the homemade natural fiber yarn, but have been afraid to try.

So, when fuzzyfibers offered to send me some natural, home spun yarn, I was thinking she would send a little bit. But to my delighted surprise, she sent me this package that I've already wound into balls because I couldn't wait to touch it.

US Shipping Tip #3

In my Shipping Tip #2, I talked about the different sizes of First class mail: Envelopes, Flats (large envelopes) and Packages. Up until this weekend, I've been sending out EVERY order as a package, because Paypal doesn't allow you to send first class envelopes or flats, due to Delivery Confirmation being added to every label for the sellers (and buyers) protection. Which is great, but sometimes the shipping is more than it could be if sent as a Flat.

For instance, I sell 6 x 9 inch plastic sleeves in my plastic bag category and I have been shipping them as packages for $3.09 to the US, but by using my account with stamps.com, I was able to ship these sleeves as a Flat (large envelope) for only $2.58!!

Now, you do NOT get a delivery confirmation this way, so you might only want to do this with return customers and customers you trust. But it's good to know that there is a cheaper alternative out there!!!

UPDATE: I've heard back from my first customer that I used this method of shipping on and she was THRILLED!! She said the envelope arrived just fine and actually made it there FASTER than some of the other 'packages'!!!

FEEDBACK

Just recently, I've decided to change how I leave feedback for my wonderful etsy customers. I used to take my time and really checkout their stores and find something that I really LOVED to reference in the feedback. It was truly meant to be a compliment to the artists and even though it was very time consuming, I enjoyed doing it.

Then someone said that I was doing was a self-serving advertisement for store and they didn't appreciate it. They went on to say they would NEVER shop with me again, because of this POSITIVE feedback they received.

So, starting today, I'm putting in generic c/p feedback for 99% of my customers. I'm really sorry about this. But I'll try to look on the bright side; it will save me LOTS of time and I'll be able to catch up my feedback easier, therefore leaving your feedback quicker on the times I get behind.

I finally got another set of Jewelry/Gift bags listed today. I've had so many things going on lately that I really didn't think I would be able to finish them. Personally, I think these might just be my favorite bags of all.

Very short entry today, as it's almost 1am and I'm exhausted. But it's a good type of exhaustion from working as hard as I can and feeling 'worthwhile'. A contributing member of society. I'm going to bed tired because I've worked as hard as I physically can and I'm proud of my accomplishments for the day. Granted, I didn't get as much done as I would have 6 or 7 years ago, before I became disabled. But I feel good knowing that I'm not just sitting on the couch or in a recliner doing nothing and feeling sorry for myself.

My father used to always say, 'Work hard and be proud of who you are' and I still live by that.

Using Stamps.com to print out postage for international packages and more!

In my tutorial, I talk about buying different denominations of stamps from the post office, so that I can get the rate, stamp the package and hand it to my mailman. Well, that's fine until you run out of stamps and don't want to run out to the post office or it's the middle of the night. Very annoying.

So I received an offer in the mail from stamps.com, complete with the cd to install their software for a free 30 day trial. I will get 45 dollars in postage, spread out over 3 months AND a free postal scale. Not that I need one, but it will be nice to have a spare.

I installed the software and immediately bought more postage (they actually go through usps.com for the postage), because you only start out with $5 and I knew that wouldn't be enough. Then I found out that I had to get special sticker paper to print the 'net stamps' on and I wasn't very happy. But they do send you a start up kit in a couple of days with 3 different types of labels, one sheet each. But it was annoying having to wait, because I needed to try it right away.

Well, I received my start up package on Wednesday and yesterday I was blessed with TWO international orders through my store on Etsy!! Woohoo!!! So I finally got to give it a try and it's SUPER EASY and I JUST LOVE IT!!!!! I'm pretty sure that I will continue using it after the trial period, unless I decide to give Endicia.com a try first. They are both pretty similar, but stamps.com is a little more expensive per month, I believe.

Anyway, y'all really should give it a try. You can print out regular stamps (net stamps), print out package labels just like you can on Paypal and get the same great low rates on delivery confirmation. They even email the customer and let them know what the tracking number is!!!!

Oh, and another GREAT thing about this, is that with regular post office stamps you have to take packages that weigh more than 13 ounces to the post office, but with the 'net stamps' you are now a 'known shipping' because they have your information on file and you can hand those heavier packages to your mail carrier instead of waiting in line!!! You might have to explain that to him/her.

Etsy Gift Guide

A great way to shop or a slight to thousands of sellers not included?

That's the questions being debated with much heat in the Etsy forums right now. I have no idea if any of my items are in there, although I highly doubt it. The problem is that the gift guide is just too big to go through all in one sitting. I have way too many other things to get done, including (and most importantly) writing to my friends and family. All of which have been waiting patiently for me to get a spare moment for them.

Ok, back to the gift guide. I've read that it's not fair that some sellers were included up to eight times in the guide and that some supplies or non-handmade items were included. Also, some are upset that a bunny category was included, when they gift guide is being made available right at Christmas time so it should have been a Christmas stuffed animal instead. I read where some sellers were calling other sellers 'Teacher's Pets' or other not quite as nice names. I also read a post where some sellers were asking for the GG tab to be remove from their stores because it draws customers away from items after they worked really hard to bring customers in.

Again, I don't know how I feel about the Gift Guide, but I have bought two different spots in the new Gift Guide Showcase. You can see my work there on November 29 and December 03. We'll see if this helps bring in any new views or orders for non-supply items. Don't get me wrong!! I *LOVE* selling my supplies and I'm extremely *grateful* for my supply customers, but sometimes I do like to sell a few of my homemade items. Just so that I know I'm not totally wasting my time or money on making these items. LOL!!!

PINKY AND THE BRAIN

You know, sometimes it's difficult to look at a dog and determine how intelligent they are, because they all have pretty much the same, 'I love my human' expression on their faces. It's only after you get to know them that you become aware of how different their personalities and intelligence capacities are.

It's very interesting to watch two dogs that have pretty much the same size brains, but yet one really stands out above the other. I'm not just talking about how well they learn tricks, but rather how some dogs seem to be able to figure things out for themselves. While other dogs are perfectly happy to just 'live in the moment'.

Y'all know how much Casey rules our lives, but that's because he is a very special dog. He is one of those "One In A Million" dogs that will NEVER be repeated, even if he was cloned. I could list all the things he does that makes him special and I might just do that some day.

But for now, I'll just say that out of two dogs, Casey is Definately 'The Brain'!!!! :)

Those of you who have been following my International Shipping Advice, know that I recently had to decide whether to continue shipping internationally or not, due to a VERY expensive "lost" package recently. After MUCH thought, I have decided to continue shipping outside the USA, but only to the following countries:

• Ireland
• Iceland
• Germany
• Greece

• Finland

I made this list based on the most shipped countries through USPS and Tom's International Rate Chart. Should I have a request from someone outside these countries, I will consider it on a one by one basis.

Also, I will be making changes to my Etsy listings so that the more expensive items will be shipped by USPS Global Priority with Required Insurance. I'm sorry that it has to be this way, but I can think of no other way to protect my very small business.

Even dogs don't like when humans litter!!

This afternoon, during our walk at our favorite park that runs next to the Cherry Creek River, Casey, our Golden Retriever, dropped the ball he was carrying to pick up a Starbucks coffee cup that someone had left sitting at one of the park benches. He carried the Styrofoam cup all the way back to our van, and wouldn't let us have it until we stopped next to the trash can. :)

Please, please for our childrens sake AND for the animals, pick up after yourself!!! And when you are out enjoying nature at your local park, if you see trash laying on the ground, pick it up and throw it away!!!

Let's try and leave our parks looking even BETTER than our parents left them!!!

US SHIPPING TIP #2:

As I've talked about previously, there are three classes of First Class Shipping rates now, not including "Parcel Post". I never consider using parcel post, as it's very unreliable; your package might arrive and it might not!!

So the three classes are First Class Letter, First Class Flats (or large envelopes), and First Class Packages.

First Class Letters :

FIRST CLASS FLATS (LARGE ENVELOPES):

If your package doesn't fit within the above guidelines, then it must be sent as a package! If you try to ship a package as a letter or flat to save money, you will lose a customer because they will wind up having to pay the difference.

If you decide to print shipping labels on Paypal for your packages, they MUST be at least 3/4 inch THICK!! If they are not, you again risk losing a customer because they will wind up having to pay the difference between what you paid for a first class letter/flat and the one pound rate for Priority, which is $4.60!! ~~ As of May 2008, Priority is now $4.75 through paypal and other online label printing programs, and $4.80 at the post office ~~

To help you to determine if your package is at least 3/4 inch thick, I've made this form to help you measure. Simple click on the picture and save it to your computer. Then you can print it out, and follow the instructions printed on the picture. Be sure to print it as the actual size or measure the opening so that it is 3/4 inch thick.

REMEMBERING THOSE WHO HAVE FALLEN AND HONORING THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED

It doesn't really matter where you live or what you call it, Veteran's Day, Remembrance Day or Poppy Day. November 11 is the day to take a moment out of our lives to remember those who have fallen and honor those who served our countries to enable us to live free and keep us safe from harm.

Thanks to the freedom we celebrate every single day of our lives, we can also change the dates (or rather, our governments can) that we actually follow these traditions, in order to have a three day holiday. As such, most celebrations are held on Monday, November 12th.

England and France were the first countries to honor those who gave their lives and celebrate those who returned home to us, by burying an unknown soldier in their countries highest places of honor. In England, it was in Westminster Abby. In France, it was in Arc de Triomphe. The ceremonies took place on November 11, 1918 at 11:00 am; to celebrate the end of World War I at the 11th Hour, of the 11th Day, in the 11th Month. This day became known internationally as "Armistice Day"

In 1921, the United States laid to rest a soldier in the Arlington National Cemetery at Washington, D.C. overlooking the Potomac River. This became known as the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier". But it wasn't until 1926 that an act of Congress recognized November 11th as Armistice Day. And then a FULL TWELVE YEARS LATER, became a National Holiday.

29 years after World War I ended, on November 11, 1947, Raymond Weeks organized a parade to honor all US vets and Congressman Edward H. Rees introduced legislation to change Armistice Day to Veterans Day. This was done so that all vets of all wars could be honored, not just the vets of World War I.

It took 8 years for President Eisenhower to sign a bill in 1954, proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day. It took Congress another 14 years to pass legislation in 1968, to move Veterans Day to the fourth Monday of October. Americans didn't like this move, so in 1978, Congress reversed the decision and returned Veterans Day back to November 11th, where it remains today.

Y'all know that I really push US sellers to ship outside the box or borders of the USA, right? I've even written a mini-tutorial on how to ship by first class international to help our international friends save money.

But, being on a very tight budget, it only takes one very expensive 'lost' package to make you question whether or not to ship 'out there'. I thought I understood those sellers who had this happen to them before, but now I fully understand their reluctance to ship further than a package can be traced.

I'm rather sad this happened too, because it really does make you stop and rethink things. Sure, I know we all have to realize there are 'costs to doing business', but when you are a small business, it doesn't take a very big mishap to really hurt.

I really don't want to give up on international customers, because I enjoy shipping around the world too much. But I just talked to my mailman and he says that certain countries ARE targeted by the customs department in San Fransico, Ca., and they have been known to hold up packages for as long as three months or more. They hardly ever send the 'suspected' packages back to their shipper either, because these packages are going to certain countries and the mail people don't want them on the plane!! So, even if they do decide to ship them back, they will go by truck only.

He wasn't very encouraging.

I'm going to be giving this a lot of thought of the weekend and I will report back here what I decide.

USA SHIPPING TIP #1:

I've seen many Etsy sellers who think that Paypal charges more than the post office when printing shipping labels, when in fact, paypal actually goes through usps.com for the labels. The problem arises when shippers don't understand the new First Class Shipping rates.

There are three classes of US First Class now (not counting first class parcel post):

Letters, large envelopes (or flats) and packages.

Letters can't be thicker than 1/4 inch and large envelopes can not be thicker than 3/4 inch. Neither of these can be rigid or non-flexible AND they have to be of the same uniform thickness from end to end.

This is why most Etsy sellers HAVE to ship by the third US first class rate, packages!!

Packages HAVE to be at least 3/4 inch thick to have delivery confirmation on them and they can vary on thickness. They can also be rigid.

*NOTE: To help thicken up a package for your delivery confirmation, add some packing peanuts.*

This is probably why some people are 'paying more' on paypal, because paypal ONLY ships packages, not letters or large envelopes (flats).

BTW, if you try and ship a 'package' by letter or large envelope and it doesn't fit within the new guideline, including (and especially) the thickness being more than 3/4 inch, your customer will end paying for the postage to be 'bumped up' to Priority rate, which starts at $4.60!!! ~~UPDATE ON PRIORITY PRICES AS OF MAY 2008 - Priority now starts at $4.75 through Paypal or other online label printing programs and $4.80 at the post office~~

Hope this clears up some of the mystery of US First Class shipping.
